A WORLDLY CHURCH (Revelation 2:12-17)
Monday May 08, 2017
Monday May 08, 2017
A worldly church is one that has compromised its doctrines to be acceptable in the world around it. A church that says they don’t want to preach a message on sin that might offend people. It is a feel-good church. A church that doesn’t teach about the importance of the soul cleansing power of the blood of Jesus Christ, because it is too graphic. A church whose message about Jesus is that He just wants to be your best friend, not your Savior, not your Master and Lord, but your best friend?
Today’s lesson is about a church that had compromised with the ideas and morals of the world around it. It is about a church, like many of our churches today, that no longer feels the great commission of winning souls for Christ is the most important mission they have, but it is one of entertaining the members, and getting along with everyone.
Click on the link below to hear a sermon on what the Lord Jesus thinks of a church that has turned away from the absolute truths about right and wrong found in the Bible, to the social ethics of the world.

A BUSY CHURCH (Revelation 1:20-2:5)
Sunday Apr 23, 2017
Sunday Apr 23, 2017
How busy is your church? Do the ladies have a Bible study on Thursdays? Are there bus trips to special places for the older generation? Are there programs to entertain the youth, as well as develop them? Is there a divorced support group that meets on Tuesday? Do the men meet once a month for a learning breakfast? Do the children have Bible study, vacation Bible school, and Awanas?
Now, don’t misunderstand me, all of these things are good and we absolutely should be doing them, but their focus is on ministering to the saints within the walls of the church, and that is certainly one objective of the church. We must develop the saints into well-developed spiritual warriors who can lead victorious Christian lives. However, is that where the busyness of the church stops? What do all of these well-developed warriors do with that information and learning? How busy are they?
So, let me ask the question again in a slightly different way, how busy is your church at winning souls for Christ? That is what all of that training of spiritual warriors is for, right? So how busy is your church at winning souls for Christ?
This is the primary objective, task, mission, and duty of our church, or the members of the church. Let me be clear here, it is not the primary duty of our pastors to do all the soul winning. A shepherd does not make sheep. He cares for them, he provides for them, he feeds them, but he does not make sheep. It is the work of the sheep to make more sheep. It is the primary work of the members of the church to be soul winners. So, how busy are you?
What is the main characteristic that is the driver for a person to want to reach others for Christ? Love. Love for Christ, which drives a desire to be obedient to His command to share the gospel. Love for your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ as we meet each other’s needs. It is love for the lost people of this world that makes us want to reach them with the gospel message. An agape type love is the missing ingredient in many of our churches today. We are so busy focusing on the things inside the church that we forget about the dark world in need of Christ that is standing on the outside of our church.

A ROAD MAP OF THE END TIMES (Revelation 1:19)
Sunday Apr 09, 2017
Sunday Apr 09, 2017
Many people ask if there is a key to understanding the Book of Revelation? The answer is yes! God’s purpose is not to conceal, but to reveal. This golden key is hanging right on the front door in verse 19 of the first chapter of Revelation. It is John’s commission to write the Book of Revelation. In fact, John got his commission from the Trinity Book Publishing company. Jesus Christ, one of the three partners in the Trinity Book Publishing company, tells John,
Rev 1:19
19 Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;
KJV
Now, contrary to what some will tell you, the Book of Revelation is primarily a prophetic book. It tells us about the things which shall be hereafter, it is not a history book. Revelation is a book of prophecy, and only God knows the future. God alone can prophecy what will occur in the future. Satan cannot prophecy at all.
Today, I want to give us a panoramic view of the prophecy we find in this book so we can use it as a guide to what we are seeing in these prophecies. I am not going to go into them deeply, because we will be doing that over the next several months, years, or however long it takes us to get through this wonderful book of prophecy. But I do want you to have a roadmap to work from in our study.
Click the link to hear a podcast on the major branches of prophecy that will occur in the future. Jesus Christ is coming to judge the world, and God wants you to know what is going to happen so you can be ready.

THE JESUS WHO STANDS BEFORE US TODAY (Revelation 1:14-18)
Sunday Apr 02, 2017
Sunday Apr 02, 2017
We talked last week about a few things we could surmise about what Jesus looked like the first time He came, and compared that to the one portrayed in the paintings that we see, pictures, movies, and books today. The best example of this image is found in the painting of the last supper by Leonardo Da Vinci, showing Jesus with long hair, long white robes, and gentle in nature. If there is a picture of Jesus hanging in the church, it will be of this Jesus, the one man created because the Bible does not give us a clear description of what Jesus looked like the first time He came. Certainly, this is the image that people have in their minds when they think of Jesus today. When they use the name of Jesus in vain, this in the Jesus they are thinking of. When they declare that Jesus was nothing more than a good man, a prophet, or a teacher, this is the Jesus that they are thinking of. This is a Jesus that you can choose to ignore, or to reject, make fun of, or even deny that He ever existed, because there is nothing intimidating about Him.
However, even if this movie image of Jesus was correct, and I don’t believe it is, it was what Jesus looked like before the crucifixion, burial and resurrection of our Lord. The Jesus that stands in heaven today as the High Priest in the Holy Tabernacle of God, does not look anything like that Jesus. That Jesus was approachable, almost indistinguishable from everyone else. He looked like a common man, with nothing desirable about His appearance to draw our attention to Him. The one that stands before us today, retains the humanity of that Jesus, He has the scars of the nails in His Hands, but everything else about Him speaks of His deity, His glory, and His almighty power as the Creator of all things. The Jesus that stands before us today, is in the full glory of God. There is nothing meek or gentle in His nature or appearance, and when the world sees Him as He is, they will fall to their knees in worship and awe. No one will deny that this Jesus exists, nor will they ignore Him, or curse Him.
Click on the link and learn about the Jesus that stands before John as he hears a voice that sounded like a trumpet, and he turned and saw a vision of the resurrected, risen, glorified, Lord Jesus Christ. This is the Jesus who stands before us today.

WHAT DOES JESUS CHRIST LOOK LIKE? (Revelation 1:9-10)
Sunday Mar 26, 2017
Sunday Mar 26, 2017
What did Jesus look like when He came to earth the first time?
Was He handsome like a movie star, or was He plain looking? Did He have long hair, and a beard? Did He wear a white robe everywhere He went? Was He short or tall, heavy or thin, muscular or weak looking?
Nowhere in the New Testament does it give a description of Jesus, and I think that was intentional, because we would have statues and busts of Jesus everywhere for people to worship. So, let’s talk about what we know about Him, and make some guesses from there. Now, notice what I said, this is all supposition and guess work, which is not something we do in this class very often. So, don’t anybody go off huffing and puffing because I described Jesus differently than you imagined. You might be right. I don’t know what He looked like, nobody alive now does.
First, He was a Jew, living in the Middle East area of that time. That probably means He had dark hair and a darkish complexion common in that area.
And contrary to every photo, painting, movie appearance, stage actor, that portrays the Lord Jesus, I don’t believe He had long hair. A lot of this comes from people who confuse the fact that Jesus came from Nazareth, and was called a Nazarite, and the Old Testament ritual of people who make the Nazarite vow of dedication. This could be anybody, man or woman, who choose to be separated for a period of time, or who were dedicated by their parents to be a Nazarite before they were born. They didn’t have to come from Nazareth to be a Nazarite in this ritual. The details of this ritual can be found Numbers 6:1-22. It contains a list of all the required do’s and don’ts of that vow, and one of them is that a razor shall not touch the head during the period of dedication, which means they would have long hair and a long beard. It also talks about not drinking wine, or vinegar, or eating any type of grape, or coming near the dead. Which are all things that Jesus did. The Bible does not say anywhere that Jesus made such a vow, nor does it give any indications that He did the things required to be a Nazarite according to the Old Testament ritual.
It was not common for men of that time to have long hair or beards. A fact that Paul addresses in 1 Cor. 11:14. This verse would lead us to believe that Jesus would not have long hair since it says that having long hair would customarily bring shame to a man. So, you can disagree if you like, but I don’t think Jesus had long hair.
We are also told that Jesus was a carpenter by trade. Carpenters in those days did not have power tools to work with. Everything was done by hand. They worked on wood and stone, and the wood was not already cut into nice smooth 2x4, or 4x4 pieces of lumber. They had to work with rough timber, debark it, and trim it down, all by hand. Every part of a carpenter’s work was intense physical labor. This would imply that Jesus would have been a big, strong, man with great physical strength. Yet this strength was kept under control, which is a good description of meekness. So, Jesus was likely what we would call a man’s man, not a body builder type that we think of today, but a man with the body of a heavy construction worker. This is born out by the description of Jesus carrying the cross after suffering such intense torture at the hands of men who were experts at hurting people. Even surviving this torture, and I believe Satan made sure it was the most horrible possible, to be hung on a cross would have required Jesus to be a tremendously tough and strong individual.
So, was He movie star handsome, with a twinkle in His eye, and a set of pearly white teeth? I don’t think so. The only description found in the Bible of what Jesus looked like is found in the Old Testament, in the book of Isaiah.
Isa 53:2
2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
KJV
The key words here are, he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. Isaiah tells us that Jesus looked like an ordinary man and that there was nothing special in His appearance that would make Him stand out. In other words, He likely didn’t have the typical TV preacher wave to His hair, and He probably would not look good on a movie screen. All of this is born out in the New Testament when time and again, Jesus would slip away into the crowds and could not be found.
John 5:13
13 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
KJV
Luke 4:29-30
29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.
30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way,
KJV
Now, I have no doubt that the Holy Spirit was doing His work in these events as well, but if Jesus had long hair and wore a white robe, when most Jewish men of that time had short hair and short beards, then He would have been easy to find, for He would have stood out in a crowd.
So, we are told that He was not desirous to look upon nor had no beauty, in other words, He wasn’t handsome. That doesn’t mean He was ugly, just plain looking, like everybody else. Jesus’ humanity made Him out to be no different looking than any other man of the day. He was strong and extremely physically fit and that He was able to blend in with the crowds very easily. The Bible is silent on exactly what He looked like and if the Bible is silent on His exact appearance, then God apparently doesn’t think it’s important for us to know.
What we do know is that people were attracted to Jesus, not by His looks, but by His words and His actions, including the miracles He did. The miracles were His proof of who He was, the Promised One. His words were for us to learn about the gospel message of eternal life that He purchased for us on the cross. Jesus drew crowds everywhere He went. They were drawn to Him by His humanity, His words, and His actions. So, we may not know what Jesus looked like when He came the first time, but in our lesson over the next two weeks, we are going to be given a firm description of what our Lord Jesus will look like when He comes the second time. Click the link and listen to hear a description of what our Lord Jesus looks like.

THE SALUTATION OF REVELATION (Revelation 1:4-8)
Sunday Mar 19, 2017

THE SALUTATION OF REVELATION
In the day of text messaging, Skype, Instagram, Snapchat, emoji’s, and Twitter, the art of writing a salutation to a letter is not even a concept that is used. The word salutation is defined as a greeting at the beginning of a letter, or even at a meeting of two, or more, people. In today’s text world, it would be something like saying "Hey, 😊." However, prior to the advent of email, when letters and snail mail, ruled the day, the words at the beginning such as Dear Mr. Jennings, or To whom it may concern, were used as salutations. Often it extended into the first sentence or two and it let people know who the letter was written to and why they were getting it.
In the day of the New Testament writers, the salutation was important for establishing who the letter was being written to, who it was being written by, as well as the authority for the words of the letter. The New Testament books were often written as letters that were carried from church to church, read by the messenger to the congregation, and then sent on to the next church. Establishing the authority of writer, be it the apostle Paul, or Peter, or John, or any of the other writers was incredibly important to the people hearing the letter read to them.
As appropriate for a book that describes the Almighty God’s plan for the consummation of the ages, the salutation of the Book of Revelation is important for us to read, and it sets the stage for all that comes after it.
Here is the message that we have before us today. Jesus is coming again, and it may happen at any moment. And when it does, you will be caught unaware. You may be living the successful life of this world. You may not even know about the sufferings of the Lord Jesus when He came the first time as the Savior of the world. You may even use His name in vain. This is your hour, but one of these days, the hour of the Lord will come.
1 Tim 6:15
15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
KJV
John declares the victory from the beginning of the book. It is no mystery. You don’t have to skip ahead and read the last chapter to find out how things are going to work out. He says, Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

THE NUMBERS OF REVELATION
Sunday Mar 12, 2017
Sunday Mar 12, 2017
The Book of Revelation is full of symbols, signs, analogies, hyperboles, figures of speech, and cryptic numbers. Think about it, as John writes, he sometimes speaking like a zoologist. There are other times that John will speak as an astronomer. And then there are the colors that John uses symbolically like an artist. John also speaks as a geographer. Finally, we see that John also speaks as a mathematician. The numbers used in the Book of Revelation give us great insight into God’s true meaning of the symbol it represents, or is attached to.
For example, the number one tells us of the unity of God. The number two is the number of witness, and the number three is the divine number of God in His Tri-Unity. Learning about the meaning of these numbers in the Word of God is important to our ability to understand the Book of Revelation. It is also interesting to me to see how God uses numbers in all of His creations. In doing so, He shows us that there is a Creator, an almighty God, behind the things that we see around us. The deeper we look at His creation, we see more of His order, we see more of His beauty, and we see more of the numbers that God has installed in the world around us. This world was not created by accident. It did not come from chaos. It came the from the mind of God. God spoke and it was created.
Numbers tell us that we are a creation of God, and they show us the gospel message of Jesus Christ. The spiritual message of the numbers of the Bible is that there is but one God, man is His creation, man has sinned and come short of the perfection and glory of God. God is the God of new beginnings, offering sinful man a new life. God has a complete plan for the whole of creation, and that includes believers joining Christ in the new heaven and the new earth for all of eternity.

GOD'S GUARANTEED BLESSING (Rev. 1:3)
Sunday Mar 05, 2017
Sunday Mar 05, 2017
How many of you seek God’s blessing on your life? Well, of course, everyone would say yes to that. That may be the only time I get a 100% agreement from everyone listening to this lesson. Everyone wants to be blessed by God. In fact, I pray for the blessings of God in my life, and that of my family’s. When we think of blessings, the first thing that comes to my mind are the beatitudes. Jesus tells us that blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, those who are meek, merciful, pure in heart, and many more.
So, these blessings are from the Lord’s Sermon on the Mount where He described the principles and the rule of the Kingdom, meaning the Millennium Kingdom. These are the characteristics of those who will be blessed during Christ’s reign on earth, but they are also the characteristics of believers in today’s world whom the Lord will bless. Our Lord is saying this is how we should be living our lives, and when we do so, we shall be blessed. In fact, He tells us,
Matt 5:12
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
KJV
It is a Biblical truth, that many of our blessings for being an obedient and faithful child of God will come in heaven and not on this earth. This is not bad news, in fact, this is really great news, because we get to have those blessings for all of eternity, not just some minor period in our today. To me, that is a blessing I want to have.
Now, what if I told you of a promised blessing from God, that would occur while you lived on this earth? I am not talking about a fortune cookie type of blessing, I am talking about a true blessing from the almighty God of all things.
Rev 1:3
3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.
KJV
We are to read this book, we are to hear this book, and we are to keep this book. If we do those things, then we will be blessed. The Bible is the only book I know of that that you can study and be God-guaranteed to be blessed by. Join me as we study God’s word in this lesson. WHY DO WE STUDY REVELATION? (Revelation 1:1-2)
Sunday Feb 26, 2017
Sunday Feb 26, 2017
We study it because we live in a dark world, full of persecution, sin, and evil, and the book of Revelation is about the light that is coming to this world. It is about Jesus Christ. No matter how bad things get in this life, we can be at peace, because we know Who is coming to set things right, and set them right He will.
The book of Revelation is a book of prophecy, and the first truth we must acknowledge is that only God can prophesy. Anybody else who says they can, be they a psychic, preacher, apostle, prophet, Imam, or teacher, write it down, plain and simple, only God can prophesy. If somebody else tells you they have a new prophecy that is not contained in the Word of God, be nice to them, but don’t you be led astray.
We study the book of Revelation because it is a book of certainty. That may seem like an odd statement about a book that so many people have said it is like a Chinese puzzle in that it is impossible or hard to understand. And it certainly is full of many things that are hard to understand, but God has provided this book to us in His Word because He wants us to understand it. God wants believers, and you must be a true child of God in order for this to be true, but God wants believers to understand His Words and be encouraged by them.
Even the most simple minded believer can walk away from reading the book of Revelation with four certainties. Four Biblical truths that you can know for certain and understand. The first and most important certainty in the book of Revelation is that Jesus Christ is coming again in power. Not as a Servant Savior, but as Lord of lords and King of kings. This certainty is our shining star on the other end of our tightrope of this life. This is the star that we focus on. Jesus Christ is coming again.
The second certainty is that we will be blessed because we are taking the time and effort to study this book.
Rev 1:3
3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.
KJV
God has promised His blessing on those who read, hear, and keep the things that are written in this book.
The third certainty is that every man who has ever lived, and will ever live, is going to be judged. There are different judgments for different groups of people, but we will all be judged by our Lord Jesus. Those who have believed on Jesus Christ will go to live with Him into eternity, and those who have rejected Him will be condemned to live without Him in the fires of Hell for eternity. Judgement is coming for each of us, the book of Revelation is God’s proof that this is true.
The fourth certain truth is that God has a plan, and that plan is on schedule, and God will complete that plan.
Isa 46:9-10
9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:
KJV
The prophet Isaiah tells us about this truth. God has said that My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure. It is the book of Revelation which is the proof that this is a certain, sure, truth. God has a purpose for all of creation. He has declared it from the beginning. His counsel will stand, and He will do all that He has purposed and planned. It is important that we as Christians have the unshakable assurance that God has an ultimate plan for the universe. The book of Revelation tells me that the future is in God’s hands, and the best is yet to come. Of that we can be certain!
Those are certainties of this book. If by the end of this study, those are the only truths that you know and can lay hand on, then you have accomplished more than most.
Listen to this podcast and then, come to this page each week for a new lesson as we learn about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

GROW IN GRACE AND KNOWLEDGE (2 Peter 3:13-18)
Sunday Feb 19, 2017
Sunday Feb 19, 2017
In this final lesson of our study of the book of 2 Peter, Peter will complete his exhortation to believers. He has told us what authentic Christianity is. He has warned us about apostates, and their false doctrines, who want to distract, disrupt, and destroy, the efforts of true believers to share the gospel message of Jesus Christ. He has reminded us of the promises of the Second Coming of our Lord and the new heavens and the new earth that will be our home in the day of God. And then he has said that knowing these things to be true, we are to be found blameless and without spot, as we work diligently to accomplish the tasks that the Lord has given us. The corrupt and tragic events of today’s world are not what our eyes should be focused on, but on the coming of our Lord.
In the nineteenth century, there was a world famous tightrope walker by the name of Charles Blondin. He would stretch his tightropes across great structures and natural wonders. One was Niagara Falls. When the press was interviewing him, they asked him how he could do this, how did he keep from falling or getting distracted. His response was, “When you see my tightrope set up someplace, look at the platform at the other end. Above that platform is a great big silver star. I keep my eyes focused on that star and I do not look away.”
This is the lesson that Peter has for us as we close out this wonderful epistle, keep your eyes focused on the coming of our Lord. In fact, look beyond that day to the day when Jesus Christ will create a new heaven and a new earth that we will spend eternity with Him on and in. Focus on that day and do not look away to the things that are happening all around you.
Listen to this podcast as we discuss how the world is full of darkness. Yet, it is the light of Jesus Christ that should occupy your mind and heart. Join us next week as we begin a study of the book of Revelation. We are in the last days, and it is important we understand what the Bible says so can be ready and encouraged by Who is coming.
